FAQ
Questions and answers.
Gourmetmiles is a free nutrition app for iPhone and Android, built around the Macroscale: a patented, pocket-size Bluetooth food scale that weighs to 0.1 g.
Is Gourmetmiles really free?
Yes. The Gourmetmiles app is free on iPhone and Android, with no subscription, no ads and nothing to buy inside it, advanced features included.
What is a good free alternative to MyFitnessPal?
Gourmetmiles includes, free, the features MyFitnessPal reserves for Premium ($19.99 a month or $79.99 a year as of October 2026): barcode scanning, macro tracking with your own goals, voice logging, a fasting tracker and no ads. It also pairs with the patented Macroscale food scale.
Does Gourmetmiles have a free barcode scanner?
Yes. Barcode scanning is free. If a product isn't recognized, you can add or correct it yourself in My Barcodes.
How accurate is the Macroscale?
The Macroscale weighs food to 0.1 g, up to 5 kg (11 lb), and sends the weight to the app over Bluetooth, so portions are logged by weight instead of estimated.
Is the Macroscale patented?
Yes. The Macroscale is protected by US Design Patent D1,082,575 S, granted 8 July 2025. A utility patent (application 18/984,760) is pending.
Can I use the app without the scale?
Yes. Search, barcode scanning, AI SmartScan photo logging, typing amounts, favorites, recipes and the Diet Dashboard all work without a Macroscale.
Can my dietitian or coach see my food log?
Yes. On my.gourmetmiles.com you can share your diet records, read-only, with someone you choose, such as your dietitian or coach. Clinics and coaches can order Macroscales in bulk through support@gourmetmiles.com.
Does it work at restaurants?
Yes. The app shows nearby restaurant menus with the chains' own published nutrition, and the pocket-size Macroscale weighs your portion under the plate.
Does Gourmetmiles connect to Apple Health, Health Connect, Oura or Withings?
Yes. It connects to Apple Health on iPhone, Health Connect on Android, and to Oura and Withings.
Does it alert me to allergens or ingredients I avoid?
Yes. The app alerts you to the allergens and ingredients you choose before you log a food. Alerts depend on the data each source publishes, so always check labels and ask restaurant staff.
Who makes Gourmetmiles?
Gourmetmiles Inc., a veteran-owned company in Austin, Texas, founded in January 2022 by US Army veteran Esaa Yamini. The Macroscale has been on sale since December 2023.
Where does the nutrition data come from?
USDA FoodData Central, FatSecret, Open Food Facts, and restaurant chains' own published nutrition. The app tracks 30 nutrients.
